A new study published in the Lancet Planet Health found that almost 99% of the global population is exposed to unhealthy levels of tiny and harmful air pollutants PM 2.5.

The researchers used a computer model that used traditional ground station observations of air quality, simulations of chemical transport models, and meteorological data to assess daily and annual PM 2.5 concentrations around the world from 2000 to 2019. Generally, in eastern Asia, southern Asia and northern Africa had highest concentrations of PM 2.5.

The study found that 70% of days in a year were above acceptable limits and that in 2019; only 0.001% of the population was exposed to the level that the World Health Organization considers safe. This demonstrates the necessity for politicians, public health representatives, and researchers to concentrate on reducing the leading causes of air pollution.

While exposure to pollution has decreased in Europe and Northern America, it has increased in southern Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America and the Caribbean.

These findings are consistent with earlier research on air pollution, which indicated that bad air affects 99% of the worlds population and indicated air pollution was a major cause of excess mortality, as it leads to severe cardiovascular issues. The study also infers that PM 2.5 concentrations as low as 2 to 5 micrograms can also lead to more mortalities.

Hence the experts have advised wearing masks outdoors and using air purifiers indoors to lessen the impact on peoples health.
